Obituary MR G. W. SIMON
A valued member of the Maori welfare service, Mr George Walter Simon, of Christchurch, died in Ashburton last week. Mr Simon was an energetic worker in his efforts to improve conditions for the Maori people in the South Island, and he had been the Maori welfare officer for the district for more than five years. He was a member of the Justices of the Peace Association for nearly 20 years and was president of the association for a term. In 1960 he was awarded the M.B.E. for valuable community service in work for wel. fare, local body and sporting organisations in Otago. A secretary of the now defunct Otepoti Tribal Committee (Dunedin), Mr Simon was also secretary of the Otago Tribal Executive and served for six years as a member of the Peninsula County Council. Mr Simon played Rugby football for the Zingari-Rich-mond and Union clubs and was a member of the Otago Rugby Referees’ Association for many years, serving as president Prominent in Labour Party affairs, Mr Simon was an ex- . ecutive member of the Otago Labour Representation Comi mittee.
Mr Simon is survived by his wife and eight children.
