Quantity And Quality In Secondary Tennis

More than 120 of the best young tennis players in Canterbury played in the provincial secondary schools championships when they began at Wilding Park yesterday. The best meant players such as Misses R, Legge and R. Dillon, two who are up to national senior women’s standard.

Misses Legge and Dillon ! returned on Sunday evening ; after taking part in the first [ week-end of the Wellington 1 championships to which they 1 were invited. Miss Legge was 1 eliminated in the quarterfinals of the women's singles ■ by the player Miss Dillon will now play in a semi-final. In the meantime they are vying for the girls’ open singles in the secondary schools tournament and yesterday they also reached the semi-finals without trouble. Seeded first Miss Legge, of Avonside Girls’ High School, lost three games in her quarter-final with J. Dodgshun (St Margaret’s College), and Miss Dillon lost a similar number to B. Nurse (Mairehau High School). Also in the semifinals is G. Hampton (Avonside), another member of the Canterbury Howe Shield girls team with Misses Legge and Dillon. She was seeded third but the fourth seed, G. Iredale (St Mary’s College) still has to play her quarter-final. Entrle. Better This open girls* section is one of the strongest ever. In the past the leading players have often been competing elsewhere at this time of the year. Originally the entries for the open boys’ section were not good and it was intended to hold a round-robin competition. However, a number of other competitors arrived yesterday morning to strengthen the section and the section was drawn normally. Players from Darfield, Methven and Burnside, whose entries had been mislaid, arrived for play and this increased the total entry which has the best support from country players for many years. The only city schools not represented are Papanui High School, Christ’s College, Riccarton High School and Hagley .High School. Two Cashmere High School boys, R. Tuck and R. McGimpsey, have reached the semifinals of the open boys’ singles where Tuck will attempt to hold the title he won last year. The top seed in the under-16 boys’ singles, P. Mathewson, of Christchurch Boys’ High School, has already been eliminated. He lost in a quarter-final to K. Lewis, of Hillmorton High School, who won the title last year when he beat Mathewson in the final. Lewis was unseeded this time because he has had few competitive performances. T. Mooney, of St Bede’s College, who won the under-17 section of the show week-end junior tournament, has also reached the semi-finals and the other two seeds. R. Versteeg (Cashmere High School) and P. Mitchell (Christchurch Boys’ High School) are still in.

Blackburn (Linw.ood High School), and B. Catley (Rangier a) will meet P. Gilmour (St Bede’s). All won their matches comfortably yesterday. The top-seeded P. Smitheram (Avonside) will play the fourthseeded J. Weakley (St Margaret’s) in one semi-final of the third form girls’ singles, and the second-seeded B. Macdonald (Avonside) has also reached the semi-finals. E. Meates (Sacred Heart), seeded third, still has to play her quarter-final.
