Canterbury Finalists Dominate Swimming

Canterbury will supply almost half the South Island finalists for the Speedo Teleprinter swimming contest on Saturday.

The South Island finalists will swim at the Centennial Pool at the same time as their North Island rivals compete in Auckland and Wellington. The times will be transmitted to Wellington, where the national results will be deduced. The preliminary meetings, held earlier in the month, established Canterbury swimming in a good light. Two Christchurch girls, Belinda Bunt (under-10) and Susan Hunter (under-14) qualified in all four individual strokes, while Penny Smith, Phillippa Truscott, Mathew Lewis, Eddie Box, Jimmy Carter, Mark Trembath, Tony Atkinson, and Roy Gray qualified for three finals. Several West Coast swimmers, who now compete under Canterbury’s banner, will take part in the finals. The most prominent competitor among them is likely to be John Newton, who has the best time in the South Island for under-14 butterfly, and the 'second best time for freestyle. Newton, Angela Bunt. Susan Hunter and Jaynie Parkhouse (under-14), Jimmy Carter and Gary Burgess (under-12) and Belinda Bunt
