Fire Risk From Grass Verges At Lyttelton
The Lyttelton Volunteer Fire Brigade is concerned about a fire hazard from dry grass verges in Charlotte Jane Quay, George Seymour Quay and Cyrus William Quay. In a letter received by the Lyttelton Borough Council last evening, the brigade secretary asked that the grass in these areas be mown regularly to reduce the fire hazard. The letter said that the public used the roads more frequently at this time of the year and sometimes boat trailers and vehicles blocked access, particularly at holidays. The letter also suggested the erection of signs and said that more visits by a traffic officer would be useful. The water supply in the area was a matter for concern, the letter said. A meeting between the council and the brigade’s senior station officer was sought for talks on improving the water supply in line with the improved supply elsewhere in the borough. On the motion of Cr J. L. Baines, the council decided
that its works committee would arrange a meeting. QUAY TENDER British Pavements (Canterbury), Ltd, has successfully tendered for the extension of Lyttelton’s Gladstone Quay, at a cost of $2281.65c. DISTRICT SCHEME The Lyttelton Town Clerk (Mr J. Thompson) has advised the Lyttelton Borough Council in a report that the formalities relating to the preparation of a district planning scheme for the port have been completed. The next step will be to make the district scheme public and to call for any objections. Objectors would have at least three months from the date of the public notification in which to act, the report said.
