POLICE DIVERS TRAIN
Members of the Christchurch police diving section trained at Long Bay, Banks Peninsula, during the week-end, and found the water cold.
The section was formed 16 months ago and has been called out to search for a weapon used in a murder, for stolen property and for drowned persons.
The five members of the team, all of whom supply their own gear, incl u d i n g underwater breathing apparatus, have recovered among stolen property, a motor-cycle from Lyttelton Harbour and a safe from the Heathcote River.
While looking for stolen property in the Avon River at New Brighton, two of the team found a bomb—fortunately it was only a services’ practice bomb. Members of the team are Senior-Sergeant A. G. Adcock (left), and Constable M. Kaa, in the foreground of the photograph, and Constables M. W. Smith, F. Tobbell and B. Smart. Inspector T. V. Thompson is in charge of the team when it is on official duties. The only other police diving team in New Zealand is stationed at Wellington. The teams play a big part in search and rescue as well as in detection.
