BROOKLANDS LAGOON

Council Told Of Pollution The Brooklands Lagoon had a degree of pollution that' might be hazardous to bathers or to anyone eating raw shellfish taken from the waters, the Department of Health advised the Kaiapoi Borough Council last evening. Under the Water Pollution Regulations, 1963, the neighbouring beaches of Woodend, Kairaki and Spencerville were classified s.b.—coastal water suitable for bathing. The lagoon, classified s.c.— was below the required standard. The Medical Officer of Health (Dr L. F. Jepson) ex- ■ pressed concern about the • use of the lagoon for water ski-ing and bathing, before the department’s sampling programme of May 8 and October. I “As the Waimakariri Harbour Board is the controlling authority for the Brooklands Lagoon I would seek your co-operation in publicly notifying users of this lagoon, particularly the Christchurch Water Sports Club, that the lagoon is considered unsafe for swimming or for the collection of shellfish,” said Dr Jepson. The council will advise the club of the classification, and warning notices will be erected immediately at access points to the lagoon. The Mayor (Mr H. O. Hills) said that all backwaters continually filled up over the years and the lagoon would continue to silt up slowly but surely.
