Minimum Dairy Price Hopes
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, December 16. A firm basis for negotiations for the establishment of agreed minimum export prices for butter and butterfat products and skim milk powder appeared to have resulted from the meeting of the dairy committee of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade, the Minister of Overseas Trade (Mr Marshall) said today.
“Progress made at the meeting just ended holds reasonable hope that the talks in Geneva will bring about some measure of orderly marketing in the international trade in dairy products,” the Minister said in a statement. "It is expected that the G.A.T.T. talks will resume early next year to attempt to formulate an international agreement which will set an effective limit to export sub-
sidisation and stimulate the increased use of dairy products as food aid. “The 21 participant countries are not yet agreed on all issues. “But, from the results of this meeting it appears that New Zealand’s proposals for the establishment of agreed export prices for butter and butterfat products and skim milk powder have provided a firm basis for substantive negotiations,” Mr Marshall said.
