Grant Sets Record In Hammer Throw

A record-breaking senior hammer throw won G. Grant (Technical) The Farmers’ “athlete of the week” award at the Pat Boot memorial athletics meetings at Rugby Park on Saturday.

A 24-year-old draughtsman with the Post Office, Grant achieved the new Canterbury record on the last of his six throws, when he hurled the 161 b weight 168 ft.

son. D. Berry, and S. Cowles, .claimed the other record with Imin 31.7 sec for the four by 220 yards relay. This time took o.9sec off the old record. • Again a technicality robbed < Miss L. Trimble of an under--15 girls’ sprint record. This 13-

The throw was Grant’s best, beating by two inches the Canterbury record that he set last season.

year-old Toe H speedster snatched the senior women’s 100 yards with a powerful finishing surge to humble the province’s leading seniors, including Miss C. Green (Technical), a finalist in the last national championships.

Until the record-breaking heave. Grant had been closely challenged by his Technical • club-mate, B. Harland, who i

took second with 162 ft lin.l Third in the senior event was the Technical junior, P. Brown, with 137 ft 2in. compared with 135 ft Bin with the 121 b hammer in winning the junior event This was one of three records in a meeting in which individual performances generally were overshadowed hy the relay and team events. The other two records were set in relays by junior funder 19) teams. A Toe H quartet sliced O.lsec off the provincial record with 43.55ec. Those sharing in this record were J. Bailey, B. Jones. G. Kilday, and M. Chapman. A High School Old Boys combination, B. Burton, M. Thom-

! Miss Trimble’s time of 11.7 sec ; was two-tenths of a second inI side the under-15 girls’ record, but the time will not gain recognition because it was done in a higher age group. Miss D. Charteris topped performances in two of the fieldevent team contest. She boosted the aggregate distance for the Technical team with her best shot put at Rugby Park this season. Miss Charteris heaved the women’s shot 49ft. Although she was well short of her best with the discus, Miss Charteris headed the field by more than eight feet with 136 ft 4in. Other Technical women had a close duel in the long jump, with the national pentathlon champion, Miss B. Poulsen, taking the honours with 18ft Bfin

by two inches and a half from Miss V. Gilmour. One of the finest half-miles of the season at Rugby Park was provided in a duel between a rapidly improving young senior, B. Robinson (High School Old Boys) and D. W. Mackenzie (University), better known for his sprinting prowess, in the men's senior mile medley re- . lay. Robinson was timed at | imin 55.8 sec, with Mackenzie close to Imin 56sec for his best time. The senior men’s four by one mile relay provided some of the best times of the season also. Although University was given a good start by B. Taylor, 4min 13sec, and R. Robinson, 4min 16sec, the advantage was not enough to hold out a steady Christchurch team, which won in 17min 45.65ec. Other good times in this race were R. Sharp, 4min 14sec, P. Ellis, 4min 14sec. B. Dyer, 4min 15sec, B. Cattermole, 4min Ifisec. The national junior half-mile champion, A. Gilmour (Technical), had a double win, taking the half-mile in a canter at 2min s.9sec, and the mile team race in 4min 21sec. An aggressive run over the second Tialf of the mile by B. Rolle (New Brighton) failed to kill the sprint of Gilmour, who moved through easily in the final straight.

H. J. Ruffell (Technical) had an excellent double in the junior field events, taking the shot with 54ft Ilin and the discus with 154 ft 3in.
