282 Hours Awake
W.Z.P.A .-Reuter—Copyright) CAPETOWN, Dec. 14. A 52-year-old housewife staggered wearily out of a shop window early today after setting up a world stayawake record. Within minutes of arriving home she was in bed fast asleep. Mrs Bertha Van Der Merwe stayed awake for 282 hours and 55 minutes. The previous record-holder, a Californian disc jockey, kept his eyes open for 277 hours and 15 minutes in 1966. Mrs Van Der Merwe had lived in the furniture shop window since 6 a.m. on December 2 and had watched four others who started with her drop off to sleep one after another.
