Hicks’s ability to get the ball up a little from a good length worried the batsmen, who looked as if concern was habitual; the unlucky one was J. W. Burtt, who had a ball of full length rise very sharply. But Huxford, the first change bowler, had defeated him with away-movement on several occasions. K. I. Ferries, as stouthearted a batsman as he is a bowler, fought determinedly, and made strokes far above his usual station. J. A. Harrison helped him in a partial recovery, and there was general satisfaction that P. M. Fazakarley, to his eighth senior match, scored his first run. To be sure, it came from a lofted hit which could perhaps have been caught, and his dismissal ended a career record of not outs, but the innings gave Fazakarley a start toward* his first 1000 senior runs.
