Competition Leader Trailing In Match
Dismissed for 94, its lowest score of the season, the competition leader, Riccarton, was in danger of defeat at the end of the first day of the fifth round of the senior cricket championship on Saturday. Old Boys, with little variety in its attack, gave a particularly determined performance to lead Riccarton; St Albans, which shares second place with Old Boys, was in a losing position to West-University at close of play.
It was the best Saturday of summer, but one of moderate individual performances.
Canterbury supporters were heartened by B. R. Taylor, who made a rollicking 80 for East-Shirley; but the same innings produced from V. Pollard the first signs of a return to batting form, and Pollard will be leading Central Districts against Canterbury before long. G. T. Dowling batted with complete assurance to score 69 for West-University. Of the bowlers, A. R. Hounsell
did best His live wickets, in two lively spells, rocked Riccarton and led to his side’s substantial first-innings lead. Scores:— East-Shirley 297; Old Collegians 112/4. St Albans 111; West-Uni-versity 157/4. Old Boys 146; Riccarton 94. Sydenham 153; Lancaster Park 97/4.
