UNDER TRIAL

The retention scheme had been advocated by farmers’ organisations to preserve the basic price of §1.45 for wheat, the chairman of United Wheatgrowers (New Zealand). Ltd, Mr R, G. Rainey, said last week, after the announcement of the Associate Minister of Industries and Commerce (Mr Shelton), that agreement had been reached with farmers’ organisations to the Wheat Board retaining 12c per bushel from the price of milling standard wheat harvested next year. In an explanatory statement, Mr Rainey said that this was a new scheme which would.be under trial for the first time. The retention money was to cover any possible loss in handling, storing or disposing of any surplus production. The growers would be responsible should any loss occur. The amount of the retention fixed should be ample to cover any foreseeable factors in the 1969 harvest, Mr Rainey said. “This is a new system and growers this season will give the scheme a trial and perhaps recommend improvements for the 1970 harvest.”
