ATTACKS ON COLOUREDS

Retaliation Warning (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copvrtght) BIRMINGHAM (England), Dec. 12. A leader of West Indians in Britain last night said that attacks on coloured people in Britain might bring retaliation on Britons overseas. Speaking at the university in this Midland city, Mr Jeff Crawford asked the white community: “Do you realise that there are more of you in our countries than us in yours? Don’t you realise that if we are attacked here or forced to leave, human nature being what it is, there might be a tit-for-tat?” Mr Crawford, secretary of the 10,000-strong West Indian Standing Conference Organisation, added: “Who would be the bigger loser of life and property, you or us?” He forecast that as more people challenged the autocratic, bureaucratic machinery of the State, the police in Britain would inevitably become more ruthless.
