MOTOR-CAR WARRANTS

Hours At Stations Motorists whose warrants , of fitness are due to expire soon have been asked to re- ! new them as soon as possible to avoid the pre-Christmas rush. To help cater for the extra demand for warrants before the holidays, the Lichfield Street and Cranford Street testing stations would work extended hours, said the Christchurch City Council traffic superintendent (Mr J. F. Thomas). In addition to the normal week-day hours of 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., the Lichfield Street testing station would remain open until 7.30 p.m. on Monday, December 16, and on Wednesday, December 18, he said. The Cranford Street station would be open from 8 a.m. to 11.30 a.m. today, and would remain open, until 7.30 p.m. on Monday, December 16, Thursday, December 19, and Monday, December 23. “We have got to have safe vehicles as well as safe drivers,” Mr Thomas said. When the traffic department checked 917 vehicles recently, 34 had no warrants of fitness and 14 of the drivers did not have current driving licences. Some of the vehicles which did have warrants had become unsafe to drive since the warrants were issued, and many of the bicycles checked had braking and lighting faults.
