Gifts To Mark Birth

Q // 1/1/ news

A group of invalid Canterbury women and several young mothers will send baby greetings cards to Mrs Ethel Kennedy, who gave birth to her eleventh child on Thursday. Most of the women will also give a donation to the Biafran Babies’ Appeal, U.N.LC.E.F. or the Save the Children Fund in memory of the baby’s father, Senator Robert Kennedy who was assassinated in June.

They will mention their gifts on their cards. f “Others are telling Mrs Kennedy they will remember her and the baby in their prayers,” a spokeswoman for the group said yesterday.

“The idea of sending the the cards and giving whatever donation we could afford to a needy children’s fund, was discussed by two of us recently and when we told our friends, about 12 took it up,” she said. “We hope others will do the same, for every donation of as little as 10 cents will help these funds. “We feel this is a gesture in the spirit of Christmas.” Some of the women in the group are pensioners. At least two cards have already been posted to Mrs Kennedy at Hickory Hill, McLean, Virginia, United States, to be forwarded to her whereever she may be at the time of the card’s arrival.

Mrs Kennedy, was reported in good condition last night by N.Z.P.A.-Reuter from Washington after giving birth to a daughter—her eleventh child—by caesarian operation. A spokesman at Georgetown Hospital said both the mother and child were doing very well. The spokesman said Mrs Kennedy, aged 40, was resting and would probably see the child today. The baby weighed eight pounds four ounces.
