More C.F.M. Sections Support Stand

Support for the board of the Canterbury frozen Meat Company, Ltd, in its stand against the tentative offer from the Waitaki Farmers’ Freezing Company, Ltd, has come from more divisions of C.F.M.

The head office, Christchurch, after a meeting yesterday, issued a statement saying that they had wholeheartedly resolved to support the present board and management in resisting the takeover bid, and they recommended shareholders to stand firm.

A meeting representing more than 400 workers at the C.F.M. Fairfield works unanimously passed a resolution saying that it stood solidly behind the board of directors and management in resisting the move by Waitaki. The meeting also asked shareholders to do likewise, and supported similar resolutions by the Belfast and Pareora works of C.F.M. The president of the Fairfield branch of the Canterbury, Nelson and Marlborough Freezing Workers and Related Trades’ Union (Mr J. Ching) and the secretary (Mr P. C.

Brown) said that it would be harmful to the meat industry and also to the workers if the bid succeeded. “The C.F.M. over the years has filled requirements enabling it to export all over the world,” they said. “To lose this now would be disastrous. “Fairfield workers have an industrial record they are proud of. The management’s willingness to meet the union at all times and the cordial relations existing between the two have been largely responsible for the maintenance of this record for so many years,” Messrs Ching and Brown said.
