Expensive Failure
Identification was examined by a veterinary surgeon after the Port Cooper High-weight at Riccarton yesterday but nothing could be found to account for the expensive failure of the Awapuni eight-year-old. Identification finished last of the field of nine. Gunga Din, fourth in the corresponding race on Saturday, won yesterday Just as easily as Identification did on cup day. Identification missed the start i slightly yesterday and when: taken forward inside the first | two furlongs Silver Savant en-; gaged him for the lead. Identification took a short lead ‘ going to the five furlongs, but he was there only on sufferance. Gunga Din was "under wraps” behind him at the halfmile, going so well that M. J. Dromboski allowed him to stride clear a moment later. The race was as good as over thers and then. Listening Post and David William had a battle for second, and finished in that order, separated by a head.
