Hereford Bull Wins Meat And Wool Cup

The Meat and Wool Cup for beef-breed cattle was yesterday won by a Hereford bull—J. F. G. Blakely and Company’s two-year-old, Clifton Challenger. The runner-up was the three-year-old Shorthorn bull, Edenburn Sahib 3rd, owned by Stoneylea Shorthorns, Ltd. In line for the judging were two Herefords, two Aberdeen Angus, one Galloway and one Shorthorn. The judges were: The Beef Shorthorn and Galloway judge iMr B. E. Pinckney. Edendale), the Aberdeen Angus judge (Mr J. Y. Scales, Christchurch), and the Hereford judge (Mr R. E. Humphreys, Giaborne).

The winning animal, Clifton Challenger, was born on August 15, 1966, sired by Waihuka Karaka 2nd from the dam, Acton Princess. The runner-up, Edenburn Sahib 3rd, was born on September 3, 1964, by Hayfield Sahib 2nd and Greenpark Buttercup 2nd. He was bred by J. Jennings.

In the judging, Mr Humphrevs placed the winner in top position on his card, with the Aberdeen Angus bull, R. E. Allan s Proctor Pavo of Totaranui second. Mr Scales placed Proctor Pavo of Totaranui in first spot, with the eventual runner-up, Edenburn Sahib 3rd, in second place. Mr Pinckney placed the eventual runner-up in top place, with the eventual winner second. After the result was announced, Mr Humphreys said the winning bull was a very good type of the breed, an excellent example of what breed ers were trying to produce. It showed good colour and good muscling, and would compare very well with any in the coun try. Of his selection for the first place, the Aberdeen Angus bull Proctor Pavo of Totaranui. Mr Scales said it was the softesthandling bull. It was an outstanding bull, and absolutely true to the breed. Of his choice —the eventual runner-up—Mr Pinckney said the Shorthorn was a very good example of its breed, with plenty of length and good muscles. It was not over-fat. and would compare well with top Shorthorns elsewhere in New Zealand.
