$2000 For Goldie
A portrait in oils of a Maori guide, entitled “Sophia," painted and signed by C. F. Goldie in 1940, realised $2OOO at an auction at Kaiapoi yesterday.
The same work was passed in at £625 at Auckland in 1964.
The buyer, who would not disclose his name but said he was a South Island private collector, said afterwards that he considered the work part of New Zealand’s heritage to be preserved.
Another portrait of “Sophia” by Goldie, which he painted 35 years earlier, is hung in the Me-
Dougall Art Gallery. It is also in oils.
There was a large attendance at the premises of R. G. Bell and Company for the auction of almost 350 lots, comprising antiques, ceramics, silverware, jewellery, crystal, arms, and chinaware.
Other prices paid were: Recency rosewood chiffoniers, $210; Victorian burr walnut davenport, $210; Sheraton styled inlaid bedroom suite, $360; burr walnut 100 table, Min diameter, $270; French walnut inlaid cabinet with ormolu mount, $450; oval Sutherland table, $200; seven-piece Victorian drawing room suite, $850; 1889 gold sovereign, $l5.
