AN EVALUATION
In evaluating the breed, conference officials agreed that size, length and scale were most important in producing quantity of meat for the commercial market, and that length of leg and sound feet were necessary to carry weighty prime lamb sires. They also appreciated the necessity for selection in the use of sires, which it was pointed out contributed 80 to 90 per' cent of the improvement in the flock.
The Hampshire Down is now well established in New Zealand and has much to offer prime lamb producers who are an essential part of the country’s sheep industry. It is proving that it can meet the exacting requirements of the meat trade with its heavy, high quality, profitable carcase carrying a large eye of lean meat. Hampshire studmasters should be able to look to their future with confidence.
