THREE OVERSEAS JUDGES IN LIVESTOCK SECTION
Three overseas judges— two of them sheep breeders, and the other a dairy man—are included in the list of judges to officiate at this year’s Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral show.
The appointment of an overseas judge in the Friesian section is of particular note. The association frequently obtains judges from the United Kingdom and Australia, but for the judging of the Friesians they have obtained the services of Mr Merle Campbell, of Bogota, Colombia, South America.
Little is known about the extent of Mr Campbell's cattle breeding interests. However, he is associated with the World Bank, and is understood to be on a business visit to New Zealand, associated with cattle. The secretary-manager of the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association (Mr H. M. Studholme) said this week that with a lot of Friesian cattle being sold from the Americas to Europe, it was considered a good move to have a man like Mr Campbell inspect New Zealand cattle. As is now a regular custom, an Australian will judge the Merino sheep. This year’s judge will be Mr C. Bowhay, of Buckenbar, St George, Queensland. Mr Bowhay is chairman of the Australian Association of Stud Merino Breeders. He has not judged in New Zealand before. The A. and P. Association began getting Australian Merino judges here quite a number of years ago, because all of the principal breeders in New Zealand are men who wish to exhibit at Christchurch. Furthermore, with only about 50 stud Merino breeders in this country, the number of men available for judging is very limited. The Australians obviously like coming to judge at Christchurch. The A. and P. Association has no difficulty obtaining their
services. Mr Bowhay will also be judging at the Marlborough Show, a week before the Christchurch Show'. An English judge will officiate in the Dorset Down sheep classes. He is Mr C. G. Hyde, of Wool, Dorset. He is a joint managing director of a farming company known as Lulworth Castle Farms, devoted to prime lamb and cereal production. Lulworth Castle Farms Ltd. runs 300 head of dairy cattle, a pedigree flock of 300 Dorset Down sheep, and 430 Scots halfbred and SuffolkScots halfbred cross ewes for commercial production. In addition the company grows 930 acres of barley wheat and winter oats, 100 acres of beans, and 115 acres of ryegrass for seed. Of the 2060 acres, only 236 acres is in permanent pasture. The Dorset Down stud flock on Lulworth Castle Farms was founded in 1846, and has been in the Hyde ownership and on the same land since. No female blood has been introduced from outside sources since its establishment, new blood only being introduced by the purchase of rams. Mr Hyde has paid particular attention to high lambing percentages and aims to get 175 per cent of lambs away prime. The list of judges is: Horses F.E.I. jumping: Messrs G. P. Donnelly, Hastings; R.
