Seriously Injured
(From Our Own Reporter) WESTPORT, Nov. 8.
A bulldozer driver for the Ministry of Works is seriously ill in Buller Hospital after an accident on the Coast Road on Thursday. Mr Robert Day’s machine slid down a 20ft bank and overturned on the road near the Tauranga Bay sawmilling company’s mill and he has lost his right hand as a result of the accident. His right ann and back were also injured.
His condition was reported to be serious this evening. The resident engineer of the M.O.W. (Mr J. S. Douglas). who was awaiting a full report on the accident this morning said he believed Mr Day was working on a bench more than 20ft above the road widening a bend. Part of the bench, consisting of unstable clay, gave way and the bulldozer slid down the bank, overturning just before it reached road level.
