First Open Tennis <N Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND. The first New Zealand open tennis tournament to be held at Auckland from January 29 to February 3 will be called the Benson and Hedges open tournament A member of the promotions committee, Mr B. W. Ryder, said yesterday that in line with other open tournaments overseas there would be provision for multi-spon-sors. Each event will be sponsored separately, and the names of the firms supporting these will be announced shortly. Because the dispute in Australia concerning open tournaments in Australia this summer was not settled, Mr Ryder said that it was not possible to complete negotiations for players, nor make final arrangements for the tournament
However, the professionals —R. Laver, R. Gonzales, J. D Newcombe, A. D. Roche, K. R. Rosewall, Mrs B. J. King and Mrs A. Jones—were expected to take part and the leading registered and nonregistered players—A. Ashe, T. Okker, Mrs M. Court and Miss V. Wade—would also be sought
