Scotland’s Narrow Win

(N.Z.P. A.-Reuter—Copyright) GLASGOW. Scotland had to fight grimly for its 2-1 victory over Austria in their World Cup soccer qualifying match at Hampden Park on Wednesday after conceding a shock goal in the third minute. The Austrians made an explosive start when the lefthalf, Starek, scored in the first raid on the Scottish goal, but a typically-opportunist goal by D. Law four minutes later and a good effort by W. Bromner 15 minutes from the end gave Scotland a narrow win.

The triumph brought the Scots the two points they badly needed to keep up with the 1966 finalist, West Germany, the pace-makers in their group. West Germany has already beaten Austria in Vienna, and with only one team from each group qualifying for the final In Mexico in 1970, Scotland’s task is still considerable.
