DELAY IN RESULTS

Computers “Tired” (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) NEW YORK, Nov. 6. The computerised news election service which supplies election results to major news agencies, came to a halt for 25 minutes last evening when both of the system’s two computers broke down.

A spokesman said the source of the breakdown was not known, “but the computers probably got tired.” At one stage the service reported that the Negro comedian, Dick Gregory, candidate of the Left-wing "Freedom and Peace Party,” had won 4 per cent of the nationwide popular vote. The computers were turned off, and an investigation showed that they had erred. Gregory’s poll was less than 1 per cent of the popular vote.

A correction showed the two major candidates each with 42 per cent of the popular vote, and the third-party candidate, Mr George Wallace, with 16 per cent.
