How President Is Chosen

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter —Copyright) NEW YORK, November 5.

The United States President and VicePresident are chosen by an Electoral College, whose members are chosen by popular vote.

There is no direct popular vote for President or Vice-

President. Each State has members of the Electoral College in rough proportion to its population—this gives the biggest State, New York, 43 Electoral College votes.

A State's Electoral vote goes in a bloc to the candidate winning a plurality of its popular vote. The Federal District of Columbia, which incorporates the national capital of Washington, has three electoral votes..

This year’s Electoral College has 538 members, and a candidate needs a total of 270 to win the Presidency. Should no candidate receive this total, the new House of Representatives chooses the President and the Senate chooses the Vice-President. The States and their Electoral College votes are:

Mr Nixon carried Kentucky, Tennessee, Vermont, Indiana, Oklahoma, Colorado, New Hampshire, Kansas, Nebraska, Delaware, Virginia, Idaho, South Carolina, lowa, Utah, Arizona, Oregon, Montana, New Mexico, New Jersey, Nevada, North Carolina, Wyoming, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wisconsin and Florida and California.

Mr Humphrey carried the District of Columbia, Connecticut, West Virginia, Massachusetts, Maine, Missouri, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, New York, Texas, Hawaii, Michigan, Rhode Island and Washington. Mr Wallace carried Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia, Louisiana and Arkansas.
