Social Studies
Sir, —Do not fear! The university jealously guards its entrance options. An application for economics was made a few years ago and refused. While we observe with wonder and amazement how other countries develop, experiment and advance in the educational field we are content to maintain the status quo. Do you know that the subjects available for entrance scholarships have not changed for 40 years? Apart from English, which is compulsory, of the 17 subjects available for U.E., eight are languages, Spanish, Italian and German are included, but New Zealanders are generally poor linguists. The university authorities place higher value on each of these than they do on economics or law. Any departure from the traditional academic qualification is too radical a step for the university to take. Let us heed the
warning given by student unrest overseas forcing the university to make great changes. —Yours, etc., PRO BONO PUBLICO. November 6, 1968.
