LONDON, Nov. 6.
Hundreds of pepper-pots, knives, forks, spoons and champagne glasses were hidden in bra-tops, jerseys and trouser-legs by souvenirhunting passengers on the final transatlantic voyage of the liner Queen Elizabeth. The losses amounted to 750 champagne glasses, 500 knives and forks, 100 silver cruet sets, 50 silver butter dishes, 80 pepper mills, 48 brandy goblets and 400 spoons. Cunard has had to send out a special order to restock the Ship for her final trip on Friday. One passenger said: “It was amazing how the stuff disappeared. “They even took water jugs from the bars, even though they are not particularly beautiful.
“The American matrons on board slipped souvenirs in their bras to get them back unseen to their cabin.”
There were 1500 passengers on the liner’s last trip from the United States to England, and at least one souvenir disappeared for every one of them.
