Function Of Church

The shape and function of the church “today and tomorrow” will be discussed by the Bishop of Christchurch (the Rt Rev. W. A. Pyatt) and the Roman Catholic Bishop of Christchurch (the Most Rev. B. P. Ashby) at a special meeting for persons of all denominations to be held in the Knox Church hall, Bealey Avenue this evening. The theme of the meeting, which is being arranged by the Canterbury District Council of the Student Christian Movement, will be “Lambeth, Rome and Uppsala, where on earth is the Church going?” “The past two years have been notable for world conferences of the churches and we believe the thinking of these conferences should be more widely known and assessed,” says the chairman of the council (the Rev. J. Murray) in a circular which has been sent to all Roman Catholic and Protestant churches. “This is why we are arranging the meeting.” Mr Murray said that each Bishop would give a 15-minute statement about the church as each saw it The general-secretary of the National Council of Churches (the Rev. D. M. Taylor) and the general-secretary of the Student Christian Movement (the Rev. R. Clements) would then reply. Afterwards there would be general group discussion.
