One Labour Seat On Harbour Board
In retaining his seat on the Lyttelton Harbour Board, the retiring Mayor of Christchurch (Sir George Manning) topped the poll on Saturday; but he was the only successful Labour candidate.
A new candidate, Mr G. Burns, who retired last month as editor of the “Christchurch Star,” led the four Citizens’ Association candidates who won the other city seats. Other members are Captain A. R. Champion, who was harbourmaster until last year, and Mr J. K. Dobson, a manufacturer and member of the Christchurch Drainage Board. The present deputy chairman, Mr F. I. Sutton, retained his seat comfortably. The chairman of the board, Mr L. G. Amos, standing for Waimairi and Riccarton, had a majority of 3609 over the more successful of his two opponents. The only other seat contested was that for the Rangiora and Kaiapoi boroughs and Rangiora, Eyre and Oxford counties. Mr J. E. Mannering, a sitting member, retained his seat easily.
