Ima Martian Wins At Masterton

Ima Martian came Into strong favour for next SatWalnut Handicap at Trantham when ha scored decisively over Arlstoc and Wingman In the Masterton Handicap at Opakl on Saturday. But R. A. Jenkins, who handled him so well last week-end, will not ride him In his Wellington engagement. On the first day of the spring meeting, Ima Martian will have R. J. Skelton up. The northerner was booked to ride him some time ago and, as he dismounted from the winner last Saturday, Jenkins said: “The horse will really suit Bob’s riding style." The unexpectedly-flrm ground at Masterton favoured Ima Martian. The track dried quickly, and become so firm that Kay Royal was able to clock 48 l-ssec for half a mile in his Nursery Handicap success. Jenkins kept Ima Martian behind the leaders to the furlong before asking him for a real effort. Patient handling played its part and so did the horse’s condition. With a bit of racing behind him. Ima Martian was able to outfinish the others in the final stretch, though Arlstoc looked likely to beat him at one stage. The apprentice D. Harris notched another success in the Solway Handicap. He kept Sarif going to beat Palamos in a tight finish. Again the second horse seemed likely to win inside the furlong. But Palamos appeared to be off balance for a while. He levelled out just a few strides short of the post to come at Sharif strongly in the last 25 yards.
