Papanui No. 1 Wins Teams’ Time Trial
Badly buffeted by a headwind on the outward stage. Papanui No. 1 lasted far batter than its rivals to retain Its Canterbury IM kilometres cycling teams* time trial on a return course from Sheffield to Yaldhurst yesterday.
Although Papanui had the wind mostly at its back on the return leg the effort in getting to Sheffield drained it of much
of its spark. However, B. G. Stockwell, in particular, and I. D. McLean worked well on the return especially after R. K. Anderson drifted off the back between Kirwee and Aylesbury. Papanui’s time of 2hr 34min llsec was well within the national qualifying time for the distance of 2hr 35min, but it was well outside the time set last year, 2hr 22min 43sec. The team captain, W. W. Thorpe,, was the only member in the winning team last year and Stockwell and McLean both rode in the club's No. 2 team.
The ride out to Sheffield robbed Papanui of any real competition when the powerful Avon Club’s No. 1 team failed to get there. P. A. Skilling retired about Aylesbury and Avon withdrew about Darfield.
An intact Papanui No. 2 team was Simin down on Papanui No. 1 at the turn but it lost more ground and a rider, P. D. Brydon on the final run. It carried on in consistent style to finish 12min 56sec behind the No. 1 team. Avon No. 2 lost H. van Ekeris near Kirwee on the way out but it battled on to finish third, the same position it held at Sheffield.
The effect of the wind can be seen in Papanui’s times. It took the team Ihr 34min 30sec to get to Sheffield but only 59min 41sec to return.
The Papanui No. 3 quartet was the only team to finish without losing a rider.
