North Canterbury Domestic Cat Show Successful

Almost 900 persons attended the first North Canterbury Domestic Cat Show, held in the Kaiapoi Returned Servicemen’s Association hall on Saturday. At the official opening, the chairman of the Kaiapoi North School committee (Mr N. Price) extended a welcome to a very large crowd and the exhibitors and supporters of the event and the Canterbury All-Breeds Cat Club for its co-operation, advice and encouragement. It is hoped to repeat the show next year in an even larger building, and an extended class range, he said. The Mayor of Kaiapoi (Mr H. | sight in the new venture and O. care for their pets properly, and declared the show open. The judges of the 99 entries were; Long hair, Mr and Mrs A. Scott; short hair, Mesdames M. Tregondng and M. Kinghorn. A display of 20 pedigree cats was a popular feature. Mrs Tregoning commented that the standard of the exhibits was as high as at Christchurch shows, with the cream tabbies outstanding and a smoke tabby a most unusual entry at a show anywhere. At the evening prize-giving, the club's president (Mrs W. Tasker) congratulated Kaiapoi and outlying districts, for the creditable condition of the exhibits, with all perfectly clean and groomed. She thanked the school committee and parentteacher association for their work and gave an assurance of the club’s future support. Special awards presented by Mrs Tasker were: Long Hair Cats United Book Club Challenge Cup for best in show, Keith Isles’s Tiddies: runner-up, M. G. Austin’s Sambo; best opposite sex, M. R. Godf ey’s Snow; best black, M. G. Austin’s Sambo; best white, M. R. Godfrey’s Snow; best grey, P. Lynskey’s Dandy; best black and white. Miss S. Steele's Tibby; best silver and white tabby, Miss B. Smith's Tiny Tot; best brown and white tabby, Mrs A. G. isie-s's Sox; best red and white tabby, K. Isles’s Tiddies; best red tabby, Miss G. McEwen’s Rusty; best tortoiseshell and white. Miss C. Ashley’s Penny; best any other colour, S. O’Brien’s Schweppes; judges’ special award, R. M. Ivory’s Debbie; best groomed cat or kitten. Miss J. Lynskeys Twinkle; best pair, M. R.
