Harewood Forest Rd
Mr A. C. Loach, who describes himself as historian to the Paparua County, has detected what he claims is an error in P. J. Hide’s account printed on Saturday of the history of the road to Harewood Forest “The present Harewood Road at Papanui is not part of the road surveyed by Charles Torlesse in January, 1851,” says Mr Loach in a letter to “The Press.” “His road to the forest began at what is now Church Corner, Riccarton Road, and ran straight for a little over five miles then, with two minor deflections, it crossed the Waimakariri river three miles further on. “At first named Harewood Road, it later became Harewood Road by Riccarton to differentiate between it and Harewood Road by Papanui. In fact, as early land titles show, the name Harewood also applied to Riccarton Road.
“It does not appear that the Papanui version of the road was ever used by the waggons bringing timber to Christchurch from Harewood Forest for, as late as 1866 at least, the survey of that road had not been completed.
“As both Harewood roads passed through what is now Paparua County territory they are of special interest to me,” his letter said.
