Miniature Games
(N.Z.P. A. -Reuter—Copy right) GREAT BITTER LAKE, (Egypt), October 13. Fourteen foreign ships stranded in the Suez Canal since the outbreak of the Arab-Israeli war in June of last year were turned into small floating Olympic Villages yesterday. Almost 200 seamen representing eight different nationalities held a “miniDlympic Games” to coincide with the Olympics being held in Mexico City. And the roar that went up awakened the unusually quiet cease-fire line separating the Egyptian and Israeli military forces deployed on both sides of the thin waterway.
Seamen athletes from all ships converged on the Polish vessel Djakarta, flexing their muscles to defend their national colours in a series of competitions. Ships in the anchorage were festooned with flags of the United States, Britain, West Germany, France, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Sweden and Bulgaria. The games in miniature took place in an atmosphere of comradeship and neutrality among seamen from East and West, and at sundown a medal-awarding ceremony took place aboard the Djakarta. The Polish competitors emerged as champions.
