Aircraft Return
Two United States Navy Super Constellations returned to Christchurch Airport last evening after being forced to turn back from their destination at McMurdo Sound because of poor visibility there. The aircraft each carrying 68 passengers, are to leave again for the Antarctic this morning, one at eight o’clock and the other at 10 o’clock. A low cloud ceiling, with visibility of less than a quarter of a mile at Williams Field, caused the aircraft to turn back.
The first aircraft to leave Christchurch yesterday was half-way to McMurdo Sound before it turned round, arriving at 8.47 p.m. The second turned back after travelling 90 miles south and arrived at 6.14 p.m. *
