IMMIGRATION RUSE
(N Z.P.A. Staff Correspondent) LONDON, Oct. 4. Robert Burns, the famous bard of Scotland, has been cited by many Pakistanis as the reason for their wishing to enter Britain. It seems that once having been given permission to enter the country as members of “Burns Clubs” on a pilgrimage to the birth place of the poet they have settled permanently. As Commonwealth citizens they are free to stay after residing in Britain for a month, unless their stay was limited by immigration officers when they entered. The trick is reported to have come to light when 30 members of the “Karachi Burns Club” arrived recently at Prestwick Airport. According to one version of events a Pakistani was asked the reason for his visit and replied: “To visit the birthplace of Rabbit Burns in Sheffield.” Not one of the party could quote a line of a Burns’ poem, and as a result all were returned to Pakistan. The ruse is said to have been used several times at Airport, London.
