FORECAST TO MIDNIGHT Situation.—An anticyclone centred northwest of the North Island is slow-moving, and a westerly airstream flows over the country; a cold front in the stream is moving slowly north-eastwards over Canterbury and Westland. Forecast: Canterbury and the Kaikoura Coast.— winds moderate and variable; partly cloudy; cool; some showers in the Alps. Inland Marlborough, the Sounds.—Strong north-westerlies in exposed areas at first, the winds decreasing during the day; mainly cloudy; some showers; cooler. Nelson.—Moderate or fresh winds from the westerly quarter; cloudy and cool with occasional rain in the western ranges but only scattered falls elsewhere. Buller and Westland.—Moderate southwesterly winds; variable skies; scattered showers; some snow showers in the ranges; cold.

Outlook.—All districts: Mainly fair.
