FERTILISER NEWS A Monthly Advisory Service for Fanners DELIVERIES: All stocks adequate—no delays POTATO CROPPING: With potatoes now contributing significantly to many farmers’ incomes, it is important to apply, in Fertilisers, the elements needed to produce maximum yields. Trials throughout the country have shown that phosphorus responses are general in potatoes and that it pays to sow 5 - 6 cwt. of superphosphate per acre with this crop. Economic responses to nitrogen are also common as long as the phosphorus requirement has been satisfied and particularly where potatoes are sown after, another crop or after older pasture which has not been high producing. Although yield reponses to potassium vary, the incidence of Blue Spotting and Bruising which has resulted in lines of potatoes being rejected by the wharf graders, has been substantially reduced by sowing potassium with’ the crop. Overseas investigations show that a deficincy of potassium induces the formation of weak walled tissue, low in starch and easily injured by rough handling, such injuries being the immediate cause of the development of the Blue symptons. With potassium deficiency, the whole plant appears to be suffering from drought or scorch. The "rust” due to potassium deficiency is often responsible for the apparent failure of spraying against Blight to result in an increased yield. Although sowing potassium does not do away with the need to dig and handle potatoes carefully, according to growers it is significant in reducing the rejection rate at the wharf and is thereby increasing markedly the profit of growing potatoes. A balanced fertiliser containing all 3 major fertiliser elements, nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, gives best results for potatoes. We recommend sowing 8 cwt of K.P. Potato Fertiliser N-P-K 4-5-10 when planting potatoes. The price of our potato fertiliser is: FARMERS NETT O.T. HORNBY K.P. There is little doubt from past experience that barley responds well to heavy phosphate applications. 3 cwt of superphosphate has, in the past, given economic yield increases compared with 1} cwt per acre. Where lodging is a problem, 1 cwt of Potassium Chloride topdressed on the ground prior to drilling barley will give stronger straw and make plants less likely to lodge. WEED CONTROL IN PASTURES: A high incidence of weeds is usually a sympton of low fertility, and increased fertiliser application gives good control of weeds, but takes time. For a faster control, a combination of superphosphate and hormone weedkiller gives good results. We offer 2,4-D super and M.C.P.A. Super for this purpose. 2,4-D is a well established weedkiller and has stood the test of time. M.C.P.A., however, is a later development which is rather kinder to clover, if the short term retardation occurring with 2,4-D should be a problem. Both can be purchased in either standard or extra strength mixtures. The standard strength is applied at 2 cwt. per acre and the extra strength at 1 cwt. per acre. As with all hormone weedkillers, results depend to a large degree on conditions at time of application. For best results, Weedophos should be applied when weeds are young and growing rapidly. The pasture should be closed grazed to expose young thistles and other weeds. Weedophos should be applied under moist warm conditions and care should be taken to prevent drift onto adjacent crops. At an average cost of 65c per acre for the weedkiller with the superphosphate spread in one operation, there is no cheaper weed control. Farmers Nett O.T. Hornby Bagged Weedophos M.C.P.A.
