RACING Watallan, Harold Bank Dunedin Double Picks

Harold Bank, the only open-class performer in the field, is selected to win the Dunedin Guineas at Wingatui today.

Harold Bank’s three wins at two years, all of them at Riccarton, gave him open ranking. His solid run for second behind Hombre in the John Grigg Stakes last month showed he is ready to recapture his best first-season form. Mr W. A. Ford’s Dogger Bank gelding showed genuine qualities in his two-year-old racing. Not the least of his assets was the ability to meet changing track conditions. He won his first race at the Hororata meeting in December when the ground was firm. He finished his firstseason campaign with a victory over six furlongs on a wet track on the final day of the Canterbury Jockey Club’s autumn meeting. Every Post, another Ric-carton-trained Guineas candidate to win three times at two years, has a three-year-old background of two thirds and one fourth from four starts. Harold Bank beat him only by inches for second in the John Grigg Stakes, and the result of the Ashburton race j should prove of good value in the Dunedin race even with the winner, Hombre, out of the field.

Two Runners

The Riccarton trainer, P. H. Jones, will saddle two form runners, Equal Chance and the filly, Crepe de Chine. Crepe de Chine looked little inferior to Every Post over seven furlongs on the first day of the Dunedin meeting and a mile could show her to advantage. Watallan has earned favouritism for the Grandstand Handicap after seconds at his last three starts. But betting on this race, the first leg of the T.A.B. concession double, is likely to be widely spread because the field lacks a class runner in form. Next Please, from Riccarton, will be regarded with some respect in his first ap> pearance at the meeting. On this track he brilliantly won the Dunedin Cup and Dunedin Jockey Club Handicap last summer. Shipmaster is another newcomer from Riccarton at the meeting, and if the footing is firm he should out-finish the others at seven furlongs in the Beaumont Handicap. Gold Nip, from Riccarton, and Chat Pak, from Wingatui, are the two-year-olds expected to dominate the finish of the Juvenile Handicap.
