OBITUARY MR J. ANDERSON

The death has occurred in Christchurch of Mr J. Anderson, who was prominent in the stock and station agency business in Canterbury for many years. Mr Anderson had a reputation as an authority on Corriedale sheep not only in North Canterbury and in other parts of the country, but also among many sheepbreeders overseas. After several years of shepherding and general farm work, Mr Anderson joined the Christchurch staff of Wright Stephenson and Company Ltd., in 1914. He first worked at the company’s seed and grain dressing plant. Subsequently he was appointed country traveller fbr the branch. In 1917, , when Wright Stephensons purchased the old-established stock and station business of Friedlander Brothers at Ashburton, Mr Anderson was placed in charge of the new agency for the change-over period. Afterwards he returned to Christchurch again.

Mr Anderson was a prominent figure in the company’s stud stock business and his links with the selection of sheep for export to South America date back to what can be looked on as the pioneering era. He was associated with the selection and dispatch of two large shipments of Corriedales just after World War I, and he paid a visit to South America in 1936, taking with him a shipment of stud sheep. Sheep he selected also went to Australia, Japan, the United States, Africa and the Falkland Islands and other overseas destinations. Mr Anderson, who retired from business in 1954, was married twice and is survived by his wife, a daughter and three sons. One daughter and two sons predeceased him. Mr W. Brockman Mr Walter Brockman, who died in Christchurch on Wednesday, was well known for his services to floral societies and to the Returned Services’ Association. He was 74. Mr Brockman was a foundation member of the Woolston Horticultural Society, and held office in the Canterbury and New Zealand Gladiolus Societies. He was a New Zealand representative in the New England (United States of America) Gladiolus Society, and was awarded a gold medal for his services. Mr Brockman was chairman of the Woolston subcommittee of the R.S.A. for 18 years, and a sub-clubroom trustee of the Christchurch R.S.A. In 1954 he was awarded life membership of the Christchurch R.S.A., and in 1965 of the New Zealand association.
