Lighthouse School
New Zealand’s smallest and most northerly classroom, the sole-charge lighthouse school at Cape Reinga, will be closed at the end of this year. The roll of the 297 sq. ft school has dropped to only four, and the Auckland Education Board has decided It is no longer economical for it to have a teacher. The school was opened in 1959, when the education board shifted a classroom to the Cape from Matarau, near Whangarei, and at times its roll has been up to 10 pupils. The four children now attending the school will continue their education with correspondence courses.—P.A.
