Kent Holds Tour Lead
(N.Z. Press Association) PALMERSTON NORTH. The Wellington rider, H. J. Kent, is leading the 230-mile Tour of the Manawatu cycling race, after yesterday’s two stages. Kent had a fine ride in the 55-mile stage in the afternoon, winning the sprint to the line from D. Brown (New Plymouth), B. Preston (Levin) and W. Cornish (New Plymouth). C. Owens (Wellington), the tour leader after the first stage, had the misfortune to puncture 10 miles after the start in the afternoon and never regained the bunch. The over-all classification after two stages is: Kent 1, Preston 2, Brown 3, Cornish
Fight Stopped.—A. Rudkin, the British and Empire bantamweight boxing champion, stopped R. Corona (Mexico) in the seventh round of a scheduled eight-round fight in London on Thursday. Fund Raising.—Auckland is a doubtful starter in helping to raise the $5500 needed to send the national men’s team to the international cross-country championships in Scotland next year, the Auckland Athletic Centre president, Mr S. Rowse, said yesterday. Official Unwell.—The New Zealand Olympic Games cycling team’s mechanic-masseur, J. Kuiper, has been admitted to hospital in Mexico City. He is suffering from stomach sickness.
