1877 RECORD BROKEN

One of the oldest athletics records in New Zealand was broken yesterday on the first day of the Christ’s College sports.

S. W. Cowles broke the college’s 91-year-old open long jump record of 21ft Bin, set by F. G. Westenra in 1877, with a leap of 21ft 9}in.

The old record was equalled in 1957 by D. B. Ford. Cowles jumped with a gusty-north-west wind behind him and he broke the record at his first attempt with a leap of 21ft 9jin. However, this was ruled out because of too much wind assistance. He had two more jumps of more than 21ft and in his final jump the wind died down sufficiently for him to break the record. Another As Old But F. G. Westenra still has his name on the record book. He is the holder of the college’s open 100 yards record with a time of 10.255ec, also set in 1877. A versatile athlete, Cowles finished second in the open 880 yards in the time of 2min 3sec. He won the 220 yards in 23sec. A second record fell when P. H. Cook won the intermediate 880 yards in 2min s.2sec. Another was broken in the junior 80-metre hurdles but it was disallowed because of wind assistance. C. Sellars ran the distance in 12.1 sec, .3sec inside the record. The results of yesterday’s events were: Open 220 Yards (record: 22.8, D. W. Mackenzie, 1959).—5. W. Cowles 1, C. D. Palmer 2, T. R.
