MAGISTRATE’S COURT Youth Fined $200 On Charges Arising From Accident

Fine* amounting to $2OO, periods of disqualification totalling two years and nine months, and terms of probation totalling two years were imposed on Robin Terrence Maguire, aged 17, a machinist, when be appeared for sentence before Mr P. L. Mollneaux, S.M., and Mr H. J. Evans, S.M., in the Magi*trtate’s Court yesterday. On charges relating to driving incidents which occurred in England Street on July 28 he was sentenced by Mr Mollneaux, having previously been convicted. He was fined $lOO and disqualified for one year on a charge of driving while disqualified, fined $5O and disqualified for one year on a charge of dangerous driving, fined $3O and disqualified for six months on a charge of failing to stop after an accident and fined $lO on charges of failing to report an accident and failing to report damage. He was ordered to pay costs only on a charge of failing to ascertain if a person was injured. He was also placed on probation for one year. On a charge of attempting unlawfully to take a motors cycle valued at $2OO on September 15, he was placed on probation for one year and disqualified for three months by Mr Evans. Mr Molineaux said the question of sentence had caused the Court some concern. While on bail, the defendant had committed another offence.

He was unable to adopt the probation officer's recommendation of periodic detention because no vacancy was available at the centre. CREDIT BY FRAUD

Peter McPherson, aged 20, a national service trainee, was convicted and remanded in Army custody to October 1 for sentence on a charge of incurring a debt of $24 for board and lodging by means of fraud at Nelson between July 24 and July 29. He pleaded guilty. Senior-Sergeant F. G. Mulcare said the defendant booked in a private hotel in Nelson. After four days he left the hotel early in the morning to avoid paying.
