PROVINCIAL CHAMBERS

400 Look Through

An open day for the public to be shown through the provincial chambers yesterday was so popular that another may be held soon, according to Mr J. Oakley, chairman of the Civic Trust.

He said that nearly 400 people saw through the buildings on the open day organised by the trust in association with the Historic Places Trust.

“We ran short of guides because there were so many visitors,” said Mr Oakley. The object of showing people through the buildings was to promote public interest in their value as a historical monument and in the need for preservation. Mr Oakley said it was estimated that $160,000 would be required to restore fully the buildings and the Government had asked for a tangible expression of public support from local bodies in Canterbury before it would consider appropriating the large sums involved. He said that the chambers could be a tremendous tourist attraction, particularly if restored to their original state.
