Horse Traffic
Sir, —A little nonsense now and then is cherished by the wisest men. It’s just a pity that words spoken in jest round the council table should have been reported and snowballed into such an issue as to have made headlines. The “right” of horses on the road was not discussed and the remarks published were just a bit of jovial banter between the councillors. I’ve got nothing against horse riders on the road. My older children rode their ponies to school years ago and my teenage daughter is a keen pony club member and she gets many hours of pleasure at week-ends out riding with her friends on the road.—Yours, etc., N. R. GILES. September 14, 1968.
Sir, —In reply to “Unregistered, Untaxed Horse Rider,” I would like to state that the remarks, “I thought the days of the horse and buggy were over,” which 1 made at a recent council meeting, were made in pure jest, and I am sure they were reported as such in the first instance. A few weeks ago a report on the Eyre Council buying a “monkey” was reported in the same vein. These few jocular remarks were in no way taken seriously by any member of the council. —Yours, etc., C. H. TYSON. September 15, 1968.
