Scouts Raise $440
About $4OO was raised by about 50 cubs, scouts and venturer scouts from the Hillmorton Methodist Scout group and several committee members and friends from a sponsored trek near Halswell on Saturday. The leader of the scout group (Mr H. A. Newbery) said yesterday that about $3OO would be used to help build a den for the group and the rest, which had been raised by some of the venturer scouts, would be used to send them to the national jamboree at Kaiapoi in January.
The circuit of nearly four miles began in Hendersons Road, Halswell, at 9 a.m. It continued along Halswell Road to Tankerville Road, through the grounds of the Hillmorton High School, along Hoon Hay Road to Sparks Road and back to Halswell. The maximum number of miles a cub could walk was 10, with 15 for scouts and 20 for venturer scouts. There was no set rate of sponsorship and boys could have any number of sponsors. Mr Newbery said that each group had completed the maximum number of miles, and the last boys had finished their circuits by about 3.30 p.m. Most had finished by about 2.30 p.m. Although there had been no set rate of sponsorship most boys had aimed at raising $1 a mile. The highest amount raised by one person was $3B. Mr Newbery said that the scout group had grown rapidly since it was established five years ago. At present there were 36 cubs, 17 scouts and six venturer scouts. A recruiting programme was also being held'at present as the group particularly required more leaders, he said.
