Cardigan Bay Wins A Million
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) FREEHOLD (New Jersey), September 14. The New Zealand pacer, Cardigan Bay, today won the Freehold Special Mile Invitation Pace to become the first standard-bred to earn SUSIm in stake winnings.
Immediately afterwards his trainerdriver, S. Dancer, announced that the gelding would be retired, United Press International reported. Dancer said that under the terms of the sale, the horse would be returned next year to his former owner, Mrs A. D. Dean, of Auckland.
The 12-year-old gelding fin-' Ished a length and a quarter ahead of a former top NewZealand mare, Robin Dundee, and recorded a time of 2:01 for the mile—the fastest on the course this year. Cardigan Bay won a first prize of SUS7SOO to give him
•: total earnings 0f.5U51,000,671. Cardigan Bay started from the outside (No. 7) position. Dancer, who has driven Cardigan Bay in most of his races since his purchase in 1964, held the gelding in third place the first time around the half-mile track, then
moved him to the outside as the field entered the home straight. Before the race, Cardigan Bay had won $U5993,171, including the SUS24OO for a third place last week in the Hopeful Pace at Philadelphia. It was the nineteenth start of the year for Cardigan Bay He has won seven, finished second once and third four times. Cardigan Bay was purchased for SUSIOO.OOO in 1964 by the Cardigan Stable, of Egypt, New Jersey, and Mr 1 W. Berkemeyer, of New York.
