DESIGN A WARDS
Michael Mattar, of Taumarunui, won the of the three gold rose trophies at the Benson and Hedges design award contest, held in Wellington recently. He also won the wool award given by the New Zealand Wool Board. The same garment won the formal design award and the wool award. In a molten gold shade of wool crepe, the floorlength dress had a wide skirt and fitting top with a beaded bust-line. His wide-flaring black velvet culotte dress won the award for creative design. Topped by a tiny black velvet bolero, the hostess dress had a high midriff belt of rpriep Gtillr Peter Rigby, of Wellington, who has won four gold rose awards in three years, won the day wear section. His winning entry this year was a lilac wool ensemble. The dress had a V-neck and side-pleat inserts in the skirt. The coat had free-hanging front and back panels, which showed the pleats in the dress. MERIT AWARDS Deidre Burrow, of Christchurch, won the merit award for day wear with a white shantung cardigan suit, belted at the waist. Elizabeth Crayford, of Wellington, won a day wear merit award with a green, checked, wool pant-suit worn with a silk waistcoat, as well as a merit award in the creative section for a cream bridal dress. This had a cream lace Flemish cap and cape, worn over maxi-culottes. A special merit award was given in the creative section to Ann Hardy, of Wellington. Her entry was a white tucked bloomer suit, which she modelled herself. Merit awards were also won by Kevin Berkham (Auckland), and Lex Ramage and Heather Paul (both of Wellington).
100 ENTRIES More than 100 garments were entered by 49 designers from 12 centres. The judges were Anne Soutter, Melbourne merchandise manager of the Australian Sportsgirl fashion stores; Terry Thomas, a Blenheim retailer; and Bobbie Jarvis, a retailer and fashion co-ordinator, of Hamilton. The “thirties look” dominated entries in the design award contest. Day wear showed a casual elegance, featuring the cardigan line for suits.
In the evening section, classic Grecian styles with one shoulder were prominent In the third section, for creative design, many of the designers entered garments for hostess wear.
